The Place
The Ruwenzori Mountains region in western Uganda spans steep slopes, high elevations (from 1,300 up to 2,000 metres above sea level) and volcanic-rich soils — a terrain that, combined with regular rainfall and alternating sun and mist, supports slow and steady cherry ripening. Smallholder farms dot the hillsides, often interspersed with native forest and shade trees, creating a natural, organic-friendly environment.
The Process
Cherries are hand-harvested and transported to receiving and washing stations for processing. At the station, cherries are floated to discard defects, then pulped and fermented under controlled wet conditions. After thorough washing to remove mucilage, the parchment is dried on raised African beds under the open sky; constant turning during drying ensures even moisture reduction and preserves the bean’s intrinsic clarity and structure. This careful washed processing under organic and traceable supply-chain protocols yields a clean, vibrant cup, free from off-flavours.
The People
Through the efforts of local cooperatives such as Great Lakes Coffee Cooperative, hundreds of smallholder farmers across Ruwenzori benefit from fair prices, technical training, and improved processing infrastructure. Their participation guarantees a transparent, fair-trade oriented supply chain — empowering community livelihoods while promoting sustainable farming. The care farmers invest, from selective picking to honest processing, is evident in the cup: 🍫🍒🥜 expect nuanced notes of red-berry, dark plum, and a gentle chocolate finish — a tribute to altitude, terroir and the commitment of every person involved in bringing this coffee to life.
