The majestic mountain range called Rwenzori stretches along the border between Uganda and the DR Congo.
Here, right on the equator, you will find the famous glacier, Mt Margherita (5,109 metres above sea level), and the Great Lakes Cooperative (GLC).
With an 80-year tradition in the coffee sector, the co-operative is now in its third generation.
The co-operative now handles sourcing, milling and export activities independently. The GLC stands for sustainability In addition to direct cooperation with the individual small farmers, the Cherry Selection Programme was developed in 2017.
The aim of the programme is to pay higher prices to those farmers who supply top-quality ripe cherries. This means that only ripe cherries are picked and transported to a drying station in the city of Kasese.
There they are immediately rafted to remove all insect-damaged cherries. After being washed and processed, they are spread out on raised drying beds and further sorted and dried for 6 days with constant turning.
The effort is worth it.
Because only the ripest cherries are harvested and processed, you can find all the typical flavours in the coffee: fruity berry jam, subtle notes of sweet fruit and sultanas, a juicy body.
