The Place
Amka Mliamaji is produced in the highlands surrounding Lake Kivu, high elevation and equatorial climate create ideal conditions for Red Bourbon coffee. The farms sit between approximately 1,800-2,000 metres above sea level, rooted in mineral-rich volcanic soils and exposed to cool nights and slow-moving mountain mist.
The Process
his lot is composed entirely of Red Bourbon and has been selected by TREVO in two distinct processing styles: a carefully managed natural and a clean washed expression.
The washed lot follows a more classic approach: cherries are depulped after harvest, fermented to remove mucilage, then washed with clean water and slowly dried, highlighting structure, transparency and acidity.
The People
The coffee from Amka Mliamaji cooperative is imported through Makeda Green Coffee, working alongside smallholder producers in eastern Congo — a region where coffee farming exists within a fragile social and political landscape shaped by decades of instability and armed conflict. Despite difficult infrastructure, economic uncertainty and the pressures of living in an area affected by recurring violence, farming communities continue to cultivate coffee with extraordinary dedication and resilience.
For many families, coffee represents stability, dignity and long-term opportunity. Through transparent sourcing, quality incentives and direct support at origin, Makeda helps create sustainable market access for producers who would otherwise remain isolated from specialty coffee networks.
TREVO selected both the washed and natural expressions of this coffee to showcase not only the versatility of Congolese terroir, but also the commitment and perseverance of the people behind it.
Each cup carries the energy of a region rebuilding through craftsmanship, agriculture and human resilience.
The Cup Character
Amka Mliamaji washed offers a brighter and more structured profile, with citrus lift, apricot, green grapes and refined tea-like clarity. Together (washed & natural lot), they present two complementary perspectives of the same origin — vibrant, expressive and deeply connected to place and process.
